IShowSpeed partners with Obama-backed studio to bring a documentary ‘The Eyes of Ghana’ to the cinemas

American streamer IShowSpeed has joined the production team behind The Eyes of Ghana, a documentary about Ghanaian cinematographer Chris Hesse, ahead of a one-night cinema release on 28 October 2026.

IShowSpeed, whose real name is Darren Watkins Jr, has partnered with Breakwater Studios and Higher Ground, the production company founded by former US President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama.

He is credited as a producer on the film.
Directed by Ben Proudfoot, the documentary will be screened at participating cinemas across the United States and Canada, including Regal, AMC and Cinemark, as well as selected independent cinemas and other theatre chains.

The film premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, where it opened the festival’s documentary programme. It follows Ghanaian cinematographer Chris Hesse, who served as the personal cameraman to Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah.

Now in his 90s and facing deteriorating eyesight, Hesse is racing against time to preserve an archive of more than 1,000 films documenting Ghana’s history and Africa’s independence movements during the 1950s and 1960s.

The footage was hidden for decades following Nkrumah’s overthrow in a military coup in 1966.
